Yangykala — "fire fortress" in Turkmen — is a 100-kilometre stretch of pink, white and red sandstone canyons on the road from Balkanabat to the Caspian. Once the seabed of the Tethys Ocean, the canyons are virtually unvisited by tourism.
Includes the Gozli Ata pilgrimage site, a meal with Yomud-tribe herders, and an overnight camp at the canyon rim.
